Bombay Bicycle Club - Home Delivery 08/03/08

Pictured above is the packaging for the Bombay Bicycle clubs home delivery. Protects your dinner and looks great. They’ve even considered how to keep your popadoms intact with a separate compartment inside the box. What a great way to stand out.

Connecting with Audiences in the Wired Age 05/03/08

Here are some innovative new approaches to Market and experience entertainment which is still in its infancy, but could really take off, and in doing so reshape they way we approach advertising in the future.

For example:

ARG: Nine Inch Nails Year Zero (Charge)
* Trent Reznor wrote an album wanted it to be the soundtrack for an experience
* Hid songs on flash drives hidden in concerts, clues in spectographic analysis of songs
* Secret underground concert -- fans were brought to a secret location where NIN played, halfway through the wall fell down and they were invaded by a SWAT team
* The album and game was a dystopian commentary on the increased trend to authority

Elan Lee is successfully exploiting this new gap in the Market with his company ‘4th wall studios’ and recently gave talks on the subject at the recent ETech conference.

To dig deeper, follow the links on the right. Is experience the new advert?

NIN - New Album Ghosts 05/03/08

“This music arrived unexpectedly as the result of an experiment. The rules were as follows: 10 weeks, no clear agenda, no overthinking, everything driven by impulse. Whatever happens during that time gets released as... something.” – NIN

I’ve listened to the albums and they are fantastic. Excellent composition and progression of the NIN sound. The music also comes accompanied with a series of photos to illustrate the music, which tie together beautifully. A must have for any NIN fanatic, and something defiantly to experience if you enjoy seeing what ‘play’ can churn out in a creative process. Trent Reznor goes on to explain –

"I've been considering and wanting to make this kind of record for years, but by its very nature it wouldn't have made sense until this point. This collection of music is the result of working from a very visual perspective - dressing imagined locations and scenarios with sound and texture; a soundtrack for daydreams. I'm very pleased with the result and the ability to present it directly to you without interference. I hope you enjoy the first four volumes of Ghosts."

Laura Marling Song Box- A new way to purchase music 01/03/08

The new album from Laura Marling ‘Alas I cannot swim’ is in stores now, but not just across the usual mediums of Cd’ and MP3’s. The Album can also be purchased in the ‘Song Box’ as photographed above. Though more expensive than a usual album purchase (£24 in total), the package comes full of posters and paraphernalia associated with the artist. Buying the song box is also the only way to receive free tickets for unique performances on the albums tour, which are only accessible with a song box purchase.

This packaging is a great way to stand out amongst other artists, have great shelf presence and to lure in new fans with a fresh approach to selling music. An example the music industry can benifit learning from, as well as something I look forward to seeing more of in the future!

Looking back we can also remember the Spiritualised album ‘Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space’, where again the packaging of the product created a new experience and concept of how we receive music we buy. Links are on the right.

'FREE' LIGHT - 25/02/08

Free light for 200 years. Shouldn't we all have one of these? This won 2nd prize in the Core77 greener gadgets competition, but I feel it was robbed of a rightful 1st place. Click here to view the awards video to decide for yourself. LINK

"Gravia" is his LED-lit floor lamp that combines human power and gravity to create a lighting source that will work for 200 years or so, and never need to be plugged in. The lamp has a weight that's raised every four hours or so; as it slowly descends, the downward motion is converted to torque via a high-efficiency ball screw. The torque is overdriven (at 1:160 for those of you scoring at home) by a harmonic drive gear hand, and the output from that spins a set of 12 high-strength neodymium magnets (which act as the rotor), spinning to power 10 high-output LEDs. - Source treehugger.com

HOLOGRAM DEVELOPMENT - 25/02/08

The Japanese have pushed technology once again, creating the illusion of a ‘water horse’ sea serpent emerging from the depths before our very eyes. The illusion is created in the same way all holograms are projected these days. Light is fired from a projector and reflects of particles of smoke, or in the case above water, to create the illusion of something suspended in mid air. It is a simple idea that has been in development for sometime now, and has only recently emerged as a fresh medium for designers, advertisers and cinema to make use of. This is a medium that is seriously going to take off in the next decade!!

Cheoptics are marketing their device for the next step of ‘wow’ in advertising, with their hologram box. This product was also used by Microsoft for their Vista launch presentation. LINK
